Kathin Kanoms

If you have been paying attention, you have noticed that at all Thai gatherings, food plays a central role, especially kanoms – sweet snacks. A typical kanom is made with sticky rice and banana. It is wrapped in a banana leave, tied, and steamed. They are delicious! I have had some with other fillings I cannot always identify, but I think banana is best. The first day of Kathin included kanom making with many of the women participating.

  1. Hey fellow PCV, I'm currently serving in China. A group of PCV's are coming down to Thailand this January. I was wondering if you had any insider travel tips or secrets. Thanks! And if you're ever in China, you have a bed at my house.

  2. Hi Laurie, Depends on what you are looking for. The south has great beaches, Ko Phi Phi has been my favorite island and January is a great time to come. Of course, Chiang Mai in the north. I haven't been yet. If you are interested in either of those spots I can put you in touch with local volunteers. I am pretty far removed in Isaan. You are of course welcome, but pretty far out of the way and definitely not a tourist destination. BKK will hopefully be back to normal by then, currently it is off limits to PCVs due to the floods. Send me your email and I'll send you some spots to stay in BKK.
